e9 Website Final

Overview/Process

For my e9 final, I was instructed to design a website with 2 pages about myself and at least 2 projects that I've created so far, this year. I had to have 1 project from first quarter and 1 project from second quarter. On the page about myself, I had to have an image of myself along with a description of what I'm good at. When I first started, I had barely any experience with web design or DreamWeaver. I had a slow start, because DreamWeaver wouldn't work for most of the first day. After that, it worked just fine. Once I finished the first page, I had to make a second page and a link to the second page in the sidebar. The second page featured 2 projects that I've created this year. Next, I created a color scheme. I decided that green and blue would look nice together, so I used different shades of the 2.

What I learned

As I said before, I knew nothing about DreamWeaver or web design when I first started. Along the way, I've learned quite a lot about web design. I learned how to create a web page, and add images and videos to that web page. I learned how to change the font and color of words, along with background colors. Lastly, I now know how to make a link to a second page. After gaining a basic understanding of DreamWeaver, I could probably create my own website without much help.

How I Did

I personally think I did a great job, for my first time tackling web design. There were many times where I was confused, but in the end I learned from my mistakes, so it worked out in the end. There are a few things I'd like to improve, though. The text feels too plain and the color scheme isn't very subtle. Something I do like about my website, is the neatness and organization of it. It doesn't feel too clumped and messy. The headings, subheadings, and labels aren't confusing, which is always important in a website.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I feel like this project has opened up new possibilities for me, in the future. If I ever need to create a website, now I can. The project definitely peaked my interest in web design; beforehand, I thought web design was too confusing, and it'd be really difficult to code. After using DreamWeaver, it no longer seems that way.

Logo

Logo Design

Process

I started off by sketching logo ideas on a piece of paper. After I had drawn many logos, I narrowed it down to the best ones. Eventually, I decided on the logo with my initials on it. I made it in Adobe Illustrator, and started off with just a black and white logo. Afterwards, I experimented with my logo to find the best shape, colors, and typeface. Once I was satisfied with a logo, I still tried a few more things to see if I'd like it better. My second logo was my favorite, so it's my final choice.

Meaning

For the colors, I chose to have a green and blue gradient. The blue symbolizes trustworthiness and loyalty. I included green because it's a refreshing and peaceful color. Green is often used positively, and gives a sense of harmony. I used a circle for the logo because they tend to suggest friendship, unity, and other positive messages. For the font, I just tried to not use a font with serifs, because those make words look less energetic.

OZ Poster (CARP)

For this project, we had to create a poster for he Wizard Of Oz, using C.A.R.P.

Contrast

For contrast, I used different color contrasts to make certain things stand out, like the title. I also used size contrast to make the more important things stand out. When looking at the poster, the title and "Olathe Northwest Theatre Presents" really stand out, because of the size. A small detail you might've noticed is that certain letters in "The Wizard Of Oz" are bigger, to make them seem more important. "Wizard" and "Oz" are bigger than "of" and "the."

Allignment

Mostly everthing is alligned to the left of the poster, but the title and visual of the characters in "The Wizard Of Oz" are in the middle.

Repitition

There's a lot of repetition in the colors of the poster. The colors, green, yellow, and white are used a lot throughout the poster. Also, a lot of the poster aligned to the left.

Proximity

The information about "The Wizard Of Oz" is all grouped together at the bottom, and above it is another group that has information about ONW. The title and date/price are all grouped on the top half of the poster.

Typography

Overview

The project was to type our name in a serif style font and put extra thought into the font. You had to look at each letter of your name and find 10 different parts of the font. Beforehand, we took notes on different types of fonts and the characteristics of that font, so we would know what to look for. Mostly everything that was in my notes, I used in the project.

What I Learned

Before even starting the project, I learned that there's certain types of fonts, also known as typefaces. The main typefaces are; Sans-Serif, Serif, and Decorative. In the project, I used Serif. The Serif typeface has brackets and serifs in the font, as you can see above in my name. Sans-Serif fonts don't use serifs or brackets, but still remain very simple and straight. Sans-Serif is most likely to be used in essays/papers. The decorative typeface should never be used to write essays. Decorative fonts are a lot more distinct and stands out. The decorative typeface is mainly used in advertising and posters. Overall, I know a lot more about fonts now.

How It Went

It was easy at first, when all we had to do was type our name and put a couple lines through it and label them as x-height, cape height, and baseline. After that, it was challenging. My name is Connor, which was unfortunate for the project because my name has a lot of the same letters. My name only has 4 different letters, so it was hard finding enough parts of each letter to label.

Logo Examples

Logo Color Schemes

Analogous

Echoing Green uses the analogous colors of green, blue, and blue-green. I think the company probably chose these colors because green is a very peaceful color and blue is a professional color, which are 2 characteristics that suit their company.
BP uses the analogous colors of yellow, green, and yellow-green. I think the company probably chose these colors because they wanted people to think that bp was healthy to the environment, and that they care about nature, even though they're an oil company.

Complementary

Fanta uses the complementary colors of orange and blue. I think the company probably chose these colors because orange is a fun color, and they want people to think of Fanta as a fun drink.

Mountain Dew uses the complementary colors of red and green. I think the company probably chose these colors because red is a very energetic color and red also makes you feel hungry, because of how often red is used in the food industry.

Monochromatic

Holiday Inn uses many different shades/tints of green. I think the company chose to make their logo green because green is often a relaxing, peaceful, color, because so many things in nature are green, and nature is relaxing to look at.

A&W Root Beer uses many different shades of orange/brown. The company probably used these colors because orange is seen as a fun color and brown is seen as comforting and organic. Both of those are good for a company that makes drinks.

Warm

Red Bull uses the warm colors, red and yellow. They probably chose these colors because red and yellow are very energetic color, and Red Bull is an energy drink. Yellow is also associated with happiness.

Dunkin' Donuts uses the warm colors, orange and red-violet. Once again, I think they used orange in the logo because orange is a fun color, and they want you to have fun eating their food. They probably used red-violet because red makes you hungry, and violet is a symbol of luxury and elegance.

Cool

Intel uses the cool color, blue. The company most likely used blue because blue can be thought of as professional and trustworthy.

Sprite mostly uses the cool colors, blue and green. I think Sprite used blue and green because those 2 are what the Earth mostly consists of. A lot of nature is green, but the sky and water are blue. Green and blue makes you think of being outside, along with yellow. (Which there's a little bit of in the logo.) When you're outside, you might get exhausted and you'll want a refreshing drink.

Triad

Superman's logo uses the primary colors, red, yellow, and blue. They probably use blue to show that superman is trustworthy. Yellow and red show happiness, because people are happy to have superman protect them. Superman obviously isn't real, but his logo is.

The Color Wheel

Overview

For our first assignment in graphic design, we had to create a color wheel. We used Adobe Illustrator to make the project. The color wheel is to show the 3 primary colors, the 3 secondary colors, and the combinations of primary and secondary colors, which are called tertiary colors. The 3 primary colors are yellow, red, and blue. The 3 secondary colors are green, orange, and violet. The tertiary colors are named based on the 2 colors that were combined to create it. Every tertiary color starts with the name of the primary color then ends in the name of the secondary color. An example would be red-orange. It can't be called orange-red because the primary color comes first.

What I learned

I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator. I learned that the undo button is very important in graphic design. When designing something in Illustrator, you're going to make mistakes. If you undo your mistake and try to fix it, you'll improve as a graphic designer. This first project was very simple, but it gave me a basic understanding of what graphic design will be all about, and I look forward to learning more about Adobe Illustrator.

What I Did

I started off by creating a circle that I was going to put all of the other shapes onto. Next, I placed 2 triangles that were going to connect to my primary colors and my secondary colors. After adding the primary and secondary colors onto the triangle, I added the tertiary colors in between the primary/secondary colors. Lastly, I labeled the colors and added a title onto the top.

AB Sequence

My partner for the AB sequence project was Tyler Harvey. We started off by making a storyboard. In the storyboard, we thought about different ways to implement different camera angles. Tyler and I had different ideas for the video. He wanted our video to be about going to the cafeteria and I wanted the video to be about going to the Library. We finally decided to make a video about going to the library. Point A was the e9 room and Point B was the library. After we finished the storyboard, we checked out some equipment so we could record. Tyler and I had no idea how to use a tripod but we eventually learned. I was the actor and he was the camera man. After recording, we began the editing process. While editing, I tried to make it look like I never stopped walking between shots. It was one, long, continuous, walk to the library. On the last clip, there was a woman watching me to the side of the video, so I had to crop that out.

"How to Print" Process

First we made the storyboard. All we did was imagine the steps on how to print a document, and draw someone doing those steps. Next, we established the angles for each shot. For example, the hallway scene was a Extreme Wide Shot taken from along the wall. The shot was taken from along the wall to make diagonal lines.

Before we began recording, we decided that I would be the actor. The video starts with a title slide saying, "How to Print." This helped me reach 30 seconds and it let the viewers know what the video will be about. While editing, I sped up the typing scene by a little bit, so it wouldn't last too long. I also cropped a few scenes during the editing process.

We used an iPad as the camera to record. We also had a tripod that we used to keep the recording less shaky. I personally don't see anything very noticeably bad with our video. I would've liked to make the title screen a bit shorter and the ending scene a bit longer, but other than that, it was fine. The camera angles and editing were decent, and the acting was OK. Something I can take away from this project for future projects is the recording and camera angles. I didn't learn much about the editing process in this project, but I did learn a lot more about recording.

Sidewalk Chalk Project

Sidewalk Chalk

Creating a Rough Draft

Our first project in e-communication was a team effort. We started off by individually finding symbols that represent us. Each image had to have a symbolic message about ourselves. There was a paper that had different symbols on it that represented personality traits. I picked all of my symbols from that list. After that, all four group members came together to combine all of their drawings. We made a rough draft on a large piece of paper. After we had a good idea of how we were going to make our work of art, we went outside to the courtyard to bring our masterpieces to life.

Drawing With Chalk

Our group grabbed a box of chalk and started to make our square of symbols. Our square was split up into sections for each individual person. First, we made outlines of our drawings. Afterward, we colored them in. After we created our artistic masterpiece, we looked around at other people's drawings. Some drawings had better teamwork than others. In the end, it was a fun team activity where we all got to discuss our ideas.
